Something very exciting is happening in Tasmania.

Aurora, the state’s electricity supplier, is currently trialling the delivery of broadband services over its electricity grid, known as broadband over power lines (BPL), in conjunction with Mitsubishi Electric. The service works by simply plugging a special modem into any power outlet and connecting it to your PC.

Can commercial television survive the era of downloadable do-it-yourself TV programming?

The commercial stations just don't get it. My wife and I were eagerly anticipating the new season of our favourite show, 24. I told a colleague that I couldn't wait to watch the show that night. 'What do you mean tonight? They had a double episode last night. Didn't you see it? It was fantastic!" Channel Seven had done it again, changing the schedule without warning.

I've often commented on the need for all Australians to have equitable access to high-speed broadband, regardless of their location. The ACS Broadband Policy is clear about the importance of it to Australia's economic growth. So Telstra's recent announcement of plans to revamp its network to rationalise its technology systems and improve services is welcome.
