Sydney Liberal councillor Shayne Mallard has positioned himself as the mainstream alternative to a trio of “big-spending left-wing politicians” vying for the lord mayoralty.

At a campaign launch in William St yesterday, Cr Mallard accused his three main opponents – Lord Mayor Clover Moore, Labor’s Meredith Burgmann and the Green’s Chris Harris – of being “all on the hard left, competing for air”.

He said voters had a choice between hi “middle-ground, mainstream team and a cluster of hardline candidates”.

At her own campaign launch earlier this month, Cr Moore said her team had proved it was “effective, consultative, progressive and visionary”.

“This is a critical election if we are to maintain the momentum and consensus for positive change that has been in development over the past four years,” she said.

But Cr Mallard said Ms Moore’s biggest weakness was her management of the council’s finances. He described her “as a kid in a lolly shop” engaging in “an orgy of spending” during her four-year tenure.

“With growing economic uncertainty, Sydney can no longer afford this big-spending Lord Mayor and her unquestioning councillors,” he said.

In the lead-up to September 13, Cr Mallard said the Liberals plan to focus on three main policy areas, including strategies for restoring Sydney’s confidence and pride.

“I’ve just visited Melbourne, and the city is booming – but Sydney is stagnating,” Cr Mallard said. “We’ve had enough of negativity – we need to restore some pride into our city.”

He said the Liberals also plan to announce policies on street safety and policing, and on traffic and parking issues.
